East Haddam Historical Society Museum
Open each weekend from Memorial Day through Columbus Day, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Historical Society Museum highlights historic photographs of our area, period costumes, and Native American artifacts. Tickets are just $5 for adults. Children under 12 may visit for free.

An architectural masterpiece by famed architect Lavius Fillmore, the historic Congregational Church was built in 1794. It features Roman arches, a star-spangled ceiling, hand-blown glass window panes, and enormous wrought iron hinges and locks.

Our local landmark on Route 82, the East Haddam swing bridge is one of the longest swing bridges in the world. Built in 1913, it swings out of the way to open the river to recreational and commercial water traffic.
Gillette’s castle is said to be modeled after the Normandy fortress of Robert LeDiable, father of William the Conqueror. One of the highest points in the area, the castle offers a spectacular view of the river valley. The castle grounds are now a state park and include hiking trails and picnic facilities. The Castle is open for tours from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day. Tickets cost $4 for adults and $2 for children.

One of the first one-room schoolhouses in the area, and part of our namesake, the original Nathan Hale Schoolhouse was built in 1750. It sits behind St. Stephen’s church on Route 149 overlooking East Haddam Village and the Connecticut River. During the winter months, eagles often perch in the pines on the schoolhouse grounds.
