Class Size
The Board of Education
desires to keep class sizes in the ranges where effective learning can best
occur. The actual number of students in classes should be variable, however,
depending on the subject matter, the ages of the students, the need for
individual attention and the use of laboratory or dangerous equipment.
Financial considerations, the availability of facilities and the number of
students at each grade level have an impact on the district and may result in
classes that are larger than the guidelines or that include students of more
than a single grade level. Special needs related to the composition of a class
may be considered in making adjustments of class size guidelines. When
exceptions to the class size guidelines or traditional class configurations are
necessary, the Superintendent will take steps to ensure that instructional
quality is maintained.
The Board of Education
will, to the best of its ability, attempt to maintain class sizes within the
optimal ratio of 20:1.
The Superintendent shall
report to the Board of Education monthly on elementary class size and middle
school and senior high school enrollments.
