Curriculum
Curriculum
design and development are necessary responsibilities of the East Haddam Public
School system as it seeks to meet its stated educational goals. The Board of Education works with the
administration on an ongoing program of curriculum review, revision and
evaluation. The aim of the Board of
Education is the development and coordination of curriculum on a K-12 basis.
An
effective curriculum design process is the force which promotes good teaching
and learning. It is a process by which
our school system can organize, maintain, and assess a unified K-12 curriculum
that will effectively serve students.
When
developing curricula it is important to keep in mind that each individual
curriculum is not merely a course of study or a listing of goals and
objectives, but rather it encompasses all of the learning experiences that
students receive under the direction of the school system. The following basic principles should be followed
if curricula are to be improved:
·
All curriculum standards need
improvement and adaptation.
·
Teachers and administrators must seek to improve the techniques and
methodologies used in helping individual students improve.
·
Curricula must direct students in development of their basic skills,
thinking, reasoning, and creative abilities.
·
Teachers and administrators should participate in curriculum
development, evaluation, and revision.
·
Sound research findings must form the basis of curriculum development,
evaluation, and revision.
·
Curriculum design, development and revision must be a planned ongoing
and systematic process in accordance with the guidelines and expectations
contained in “A Plan to Develop Curriculum in the East Haddam Public Schools.”
