Students
Bus Conduct
Bus transportation shall
be provided to all students. Proper conduct on the bus is expected of all
students.
The bus driver is in
charge at all times and can demand the observance of the regulations required
of all students. Failure to comply with bus regulations will result in the
suspension of bus privileges. State law requires that there be no smoking on
school buses.
If a student is denied bus
privileges due to violation of the regulations under “Code of Behavior for Bus
Students” below, the parent will be required to furnish transportation to and
from school during the entire suspension of bus privileges.
Students who ride the
buses to games and field trips must ride the same bus back unless given
permission by the teacher or staff member in charge.
In order to insure a safe,
pleasant ride to school for our bus students, the following code of safe riding
practices has been established:
1. Courtesy will be shown at all times to schoolmates and bus
drivers.
2. Students abusing or destroying property will be responsible
for payment.
3. All students will observe rules of safety when waiting for,
boarding, and leaving the bus:
a. While
waiting ‑ Students should stand away from traffic; wait at designated
bus stop; no wandering on private property.
b. While boarding ‑ Students shall
follow directions of the driver. Enter in a single file.
c. While leaving ‑ Students shall follow directions of the driver. Leave in single file; cross highway in front of bus.
4. While on the bus, students shall remain
seated. No refuse will be left on the bus. Students will enter and leave as
directed by the driver. A bus driver may request a student to sit in a
particular seat. The student shall obey without hesitation.
5. Students must avoid distracting the
driver by any action which will not ensue the safety of everyone on the bus.

Students
Bus Conduct
6. During emergencies or emergency
practice drills, students shall follow the directions of the bus driver.
7. Students shall not stick their heads,
hands, or objects out of the bus window.
8. Students shall not shout on the buses.
They may talk in a conversational tone of voice.
9. Students shall not fight on the bus.
They shall not hit, slap, or swing their hands nor kick with their feet, even
in “fun.” Under no circumstances shall anything be thrown.
10. All students, employees, and agents of the East Haddam Board of Education shall refrain from lighting matches, smoking or using tobacco products while riding Board of Education sponsored school buses.
11. Abusive language to schoolmates, drivers,
or other responsible adults will not be tolerated.
12. A bus is like a classroom. Students shall
show obedience and respect to the bus drivers at all times. Failure to do so
could result in suspension in bus privileges.
13. When the bus driver arises and faces
students to speak to them, the students must be silent immediately.
14. Students causing a disturbance will be
reported to the Assistant Principal by the bus driver and warned by a letter
from the Assistant Principal to the parents. If the warning is not heeded, the
Assistant Principal will then notify the student and his/her parents that the
privilege of bus transportation will be denied for a designated period of time.
15. Students may not ride a bus other than the one to which they
are assigned.
